Mercury Warning in Mexico-made Skin Cream

The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and South Texas Poison Control are warning consumers that Mexico-made skin cream Crema Aguamary may contain high levels of mercury.

According to an article by KENS 5, the cream may be linked to some cases of mercury poisoning. South Texas doctors reportedly have found some women who used it started having adverse reactions including abdominal pain and tremors.

Crema Aguamary tests showed inorganic mercury concentrations of up to 131,000 ppm. The US Food and Drug Administration restricts cosmetic products to no more than 1 ppm.

There have been more than 20 cases of mercury poisoning from the product in border Texas/Mexico border towns such as Mission McAllen and Rio Grande City. However, the DSHS expects that the cream could turn up mercury poisoning cases in other market areas.
