Title: Colipa Supports Directive Review
  • Article

Colipa supports the vote by the European Parliament’s Environment Committee, agreeing with the European Commission to review the Cosmetics Directive.

On Dec. 2, 2008, the Environment Committee of the European Parliament voted on the European Commission’s proposal to recast the existing Cosmetics Directive 76/768/EEC. The original directive has been amended frequently over time and dates back 30 years. This review seeks to streamline the existing requirements to make them directly applicable in all the 27 EU member states without the need for each country to implement the changes into national legislation.

The change from a directive to a regulation aims at ensuring an equally high level of consumer protection that is transparent throughout the EU, thus enhancing the smooth running of the EU Single Market, while maintaining and highlighting manufacturer responsibility for product safety throughout greater Europe.

“We attach high importance to an open and constructive dialogue with the European Parliament on this review process," stated Bertil Heerink, director general of Colipa, in a press announcement. "Consumers benefit from an innovative cosmetics industry that provides high quality and safe products. Colipa, therefore, fully supports this initiative to update and streamline legislation, continuing to ensure consumer confidence in our industry and its products. We will now study the outcome of the vote and analyze its potential impact. The European cosmetics industry will continue to offer its experience and expertise in the review process."
