Claire's, a retailer of accessories, cosmetics and jewelry aimed at young girls and teenagers, has recalled several glitter-containing products after allegations surfaced that they contain asbestos.

Reports first came from Rhode Island's WJAR-TV after Kristi Warner's laboratory test of her daughter's makeup kit found tremolite asbestos, which can cause cancer.

According to a statement issued by the brand on Dec. 22: "At Claire's the safety of our customers is of paramount importance, and we are passionate about the safety and integrity of our products. We work closely with our vendors to ensure our products are tested and assessed in line with the relevant country regulations and guidelines.

As a result of today's inquiry from WJAR-TV, we have taken the precautionary measure of pulling the items in question from sale and will be conducting an immediate investigation into the alleged issues. Once we have more information and have the results of the investigation we will take the necessary action."

Recalled items include:

  • Ultimate Mega Make Up Set;
  • Metallic Hot Pink Glitter 48 Piece Makeup Set;
  • Pink Glitter Cellphone Makeup Compact;
  • Bedazzled Rainbow Heart Makeup Set;
  • Rainbow Bedazzled Star Make Up Set ;
  • Rainbow Glitter Heart Shaped Makeup Set;
  • Mint Glitter Make Up Set;
  • Rainbow Bedazzled Rectangle Make Up Set; and
  • Pink Glitter Palette with Eyeshadow & Lip Gloss.

The brand announced on Dec. 27 that it is pursuing an independent laboratory to determine whether the asbestos allegations are accurate.

UPDATE: Claire's released the following statement on Dec. 29: "The initial results of testing by an independent certified laboratory show that the cosmetics tested to date are asbestos free. Out of an abundance of caution, additional testing is underway. We have also confirmed that the talcum ingredient supply is from a certified asbestos free European vendor. We will continue to honor returns for any customers remaining uncomfortable."
