FDA Issues Warning Over Hand Sanitizer Claims

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning letter to Procter & Gamble Co. over hand sanitizer claims. According to the letter, the FDA found the company was unlawfully marketing Vicks Early Defense Foaming Hand Sanitizer. The claims in question are the product's ability to prevent colds and provide up to three hours of antimicrobial activity.

In its warning letter, the FDA maintained that it’s concerned that the product has not been proven safe and effective for the claims made by P&G. P&G has said that the claims are legitimate and comply with FDA regulations.

P&G reportedly will work with the FDA to clear up any misconceptions. The hand sanitizer contains triclosan, which under FDA standards for antimicrobial products, must have labeling that directs consumers to rinse with water after use. For more information, visit www.fda.gov.

Currently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, with a few exceptions, has no requirements for cosmetics to be labeled with either a manufacturing date, “best by” use date or PAO. Manufacturers are held responsible for making sure their products are safe.
