Gattefossé is celebrating its 130 anniversary in 2010 at In-Cosmetics in Paris. The company was founded in 1880 by René-Maurice Gattefossé, whose interest ranged from botany and perfumery to philosophy, archaeology, publishing and the origins of man. He created the publication Modern Perfumery, and he continually was interested in therapy through essential oils, known as aromatherapy.
René-Maurice Gattefossé was the grandfather of the Gattefossé Foundation's current president Sophie Gattefossé-Moyrand. Her father, Marcel Gattefossé, arrived in the company during the post-war pharmaceutical boom, and together with his brother-in-law Emile Mahler, he carved out a niche in pharmaceutical excipients. He also left his mark of credibility in dermo-cosmetology.
Today the company offers innovations to the personal care and pharmaceutical industries not only its expertise in oleochemistry and biological extraction, but also in formulation. In 2009, a new laboratory, specializing in cellular culture, was established for the company's R&D department and its team of 30 researchers. Gattefossé continues to invest for tomorrow’s research by building a new laboratory unit on its Saint-Priest site.
