Hydron Technologies Inc. announced it has been granted U.S. Patent Number 6,984,391 for, “Compositions and Method for Delivery of Skin Cosmeceuticals.” This self-adjusting emulsion system reportedly has been proven to deliver improved benefits for a variety of cosmetic and pharmaceutical products, including antiaging skin care, sunscreens, acne and psoriasis treatments, as well as pharmaceutical ingredients.
According to a report by PRNewswire, it is known that the epidermal surface is slightly acidic. Recent studies have demonstrated that the skin's barrier recovery is most active when the skin's acidity is maintained, while barrier recovery is actually delayed when exposed to neutral or slightly alkaline environments. Additionally, various hydrolytic enzymes responsible for the formation of essential intercorneocyte lipids are only activated with an acidic pH.
According to the report, David Pollock, Hydron's chief executive officer (CEO), said that the majority of skin treatments use emulsifying agents that are non-volatile, remaining on the skin until removed by cleansing, and have a neutral pH of 6 to 7.5. These traditional emulsion systems interfere with normal skin regenerative functions and are actually detrimental.
The company’s newly patented emulsion system allows for an initial neutral pH of 6.5 to 7 upon application to the skin, then evaporates and self-adjusts to the skin's natural slightly acidic pH of 4.5 to 5. The company reports its pH self-adjusting, evaporating emulsifier system offers a significant advancement over competitive products currently offered.
The company is utilizing this patented system in its branded product line and evaluating the potential of licensing the technology for use in various dermatological, department store, television shopping, infomercial and pharmaceutical categories.
