Growth Reported in Prestige Makeup With Nails Leading Increase

The US prestige makeup market grew nearly 8% to reach US $2.8 billion over the first 10 months in 2011 (January to October). According to a report by the NPD Group Inc., all prestige makeup segments saw dollar growth: nail products grew 59%, eye color and all other color each grew 10%, makeup sets grew 9%, lip color grew 8% and  facial cosmetics grew 7%.

The nail segment showed 50+% increases for both nail enamel and top/base coats. In lip, it was lip color that stole the dollars away from lip gloss and liner (each declining -1% in sales). Lip color outperformed the category’s dollar performance of 8%, with an increase of 12%.

Concealer and foundation showed the most growth in facial cosmetics, while eye shadow, eye brow and mascara grew the most in eye cosmetics. According to the report, the dramatic eye trend drove eye shadow palette sales. Eye shadow consisting of five or more palettes grew triple digits in dollar sales, compared to the same time last year. Quad palettes grew double-digits.
