Conference Speakers

Johann WIechers, PhD
Johann Wiechers

Johann Wiechers, Summit Scientific Advisor
A pharmacist by training, Johann Wiechers, PhD completed his doctorate degree in 1989 at the University of Groningen, Netherlands, where he specialized in skin penetration enhancement. Following six years at Unilever Research in the UK, he joined Uniqema in Gouda, Netherlands, in 1995, as skin R&D director. His main interests are in cosmetic claim substantiation, noninvasive skin bioengineering, skin sensory techniques, clinical trial design, skin penetration and biostatistics. In April 2007, he was appointed visiting professor at the University of London, School of Pharmacy, and in June 2007, he launched his own cosmetic science consultancy, JW Solutions.

Wiechers has been a member of the International Federation of the Societies of Cosmetic Chemists (IFSCC) Presidium since 1998 and currently serves as president. He served as chair of the scientific committee for the successful 2007 IFSCC Conference, held in Amsterdam, Netherlands, in September 2007, where he was installed as president of the IFSCC.

Tim Kapsner

Tim Kapsner, Green Summit Moderator

Tim Kapsner is a senior chemist at Aveda, member of the Organic Trade Association (OTA) and NSF International, and is a founding member of the newly launched Organic and Sustainable Industry Standards (OASIS) association for health and beauty products in the United States.

Organic Formulating
Kapsner will discuss how organic cosmetic claims can range from unnoticeable to absurd or even blatantly false, and that several committees worldwide have worked to develop organic cosmetic standards in response to such issues. His talk will give a brief background on current standards to show how they affect product claims and formulations incorporating organics. He will also explain how the cosmetic chemist can formulate to meet these standards, what reactions can be used to process materials in the lab yet maintain an organic claim, and how to calculate the organic content in a formulation.

Steve Schnittger

Steve Schnittger

Steve Schnittger presently is the executive director of microbiology–R&D for The Estée Lauder Companies. He has been with Lauder for more than 20 years, all within the microbiology lab. Schnittger's primary responsibilities are cosmetic preservation and advising chemists on new formulations. He is also responsible for developing new active ingredients through fermentation, and advising the manufacturing facility regarding cleaning and sanitization procedures. Schnittger is past chairman of the CTFA Microbiology Committee and a member of the American Society of Microbiology, Society of Cosmetic Chemists, and the Institute of Food Technology, and also holds numerous patents in cosmetic science.

Natural Preservation
Schnittger will present on the topic of natural preservatives, what "natural" and "organic" mean to the consumer, and how that perception translates in the lab. He will discuss product safety and explain that the formulating chemist must bear in mind that although the end desire may be a "green" or "organic" claim on the label, ultimately the product must be safe.

Anthony Dweck

Anthony Dweck

Anthony C. Dweck of Dweck Data, formed his consultancy to devote more time to the study of botanicals and their chemistry. He is a twice past president of the Society of Cosmetic Scientists (SCS) and was made an honorary member of the society in 2004. He is a member of numerous scientific advisory boards and also a frequent lecturer on his favorite topic—botanicals and medicinal plants, having presented more than 80 papers around the world.

Formulating Green and Natural Products
This talk will look at the successful ideas used to formulate green products, including choices of natural fixed oils, plant-sourced waxes and butters, natural or nature identical preservatives, natural colors, thickeners and the ever-difficult topic of natural and naturally derived emulsifiers. Dweck will spend a little time highlighting the compromises that may be necessary and the increasing number of endorsements that are helping to enrich the marketing claims.

James Clark

James Clark

Professor James Clark, PhD, is the director of the Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence at the University of York, UK. The centre is a hub for research on green chemistry with more than 20 full-time postgraduate researchers working on projects from clean synthesis of important compounds to novel biomaterials. The centre is also actively involved in industrial collaboration and specializes in creating green and sustainable supply chains. Clark holds numerous awards and distinctions from UK and European organizations including the RSC John Jeyes Medal and SCI Environment Medal.

Greening Formulations Chemistry
Clark will discuss green chemistry as both a philosophy and a set of practical techniques, and methodologies designed to reduce environmental impact and increase sustainability across the full chemical product life cycle. In this presentation, he will consider the drivers for change and explore how green chemistry can be used to both address the challenges and lead to improved business performance through reduced costs and through the added value of “greener" products.

He will consider:

  • Green chemistry reductions in the personal care laboratory
  • Innovative changes to the production of personal care products
  • Ways of measuring environmental impact and product greenness
  • The potential for using natural products and renewable resources as building blocks for personal care

He will also look at lessons learned by other industrial sectors and technologies and methodologies that can be transferred into personal care.

Laura Root
Laura Root

Laura Root

Laura Root, director of product development for Antiqua Prima, has been added to the C&T magazine’s Green Summit speaker lineup to discuss “the natural/green" supply chain – including topics such as: the discovery process, testing for consistency in materials, sustainability programs, what formulators should know about suppliers along the "green" chain and substitution of synthetics with naturals.

Root has formulated for some of the largest “green” brands in the industry and has practical experience in the everyday realities of green formulation--from lab practices to the green supply chain. She currently is the director of product development for Antiqua Prima and is additionally a CIDESCO diplomat.

After pursuing a lifelong interest in skin care, Root received her esthetics license in May 1994 and has extended her areas of practice to include medical esthetics, micropigmentation and day spa techniques. Root holds the prestigious International CIDESCO diploma, representing the highest achievement in the esthetic industry. She has concluded studies for a degree in holistic nutrition and became a certified surgical technologist in 2003. She is currently pursuing a biochemistry degree. Root has worked closely with laboratories in formulating cutting-edge skin care products for medical spas and others in the industry. She is widely published and has researched and written on microdermabrasion, the use of bioflavonoids in skin care, sunscreen updates, ingredients in skin care, hyaluronic acid and more.
