Silicone Copolymer for Wetting, Emulsifying in Hair Care
Posted: July 14, 2010
NuSil Technology LLC has launched a silicone-glycol copolymer that functions as a wetting agent and emulsifier in hair care formulations. PCM-7919 (INCI: PEG/PPG-18/18 Dimethicone) is said to impart a soft, silky feel to hair as well as act as a detangling agent. In addition, it can be used as a resin plasticizer in hair-styling products.
Supplied in a colorless to light amber liquid, the dimethicone has an approximate 1,500 cP viscosity, a characteristic odor, and is required only in low amounts for most formulations. The material adds shine and lubricity to hair as well as acts as a humectant and emollient in skin products.
The dimethicone reportedly is a good surface tension depressant that does not irritate skin. Finally, formulation with it results in stable formulations and the material is compatible with a wide range of cosmetic ingredients.
