The demand for personal care products made with natural, renewable materials shows no sign of abating. Lubrizol is responding by launching two new products: a naturally derived thickener, Glucamate™ CCO thickener, a product that builds viscosity without ethoxylation while offering broad ingredient compatibility; and a new high-solids surfactant, Sulfochem™ ES-70DXS surfactant, that pushes 1,4 dioxane levels closer to single digits and is extremely easy to handle. What’s more, the cleansing products they enable still deliver the sensory and safety properties that consumers expect.

Many certified organic shampoos and body washes use soaps such as potassium cocoate as their primary cleansing agent, partially due to a lack of suitable, organically approved foaming alternatives. This article reviews the use of modern surfactants and emulsifiers developed based on a green and eco-conscious philosophy.

PEG-2 caprylylamine, when used as an adjuvant surfactant formulated in a basic cleanser, can significantly increase lathering rate, as sensory evaluations, dynamic and static surface tension measurements, and the Ross-Miles method show here. Mechanisms of action for this new field of research also are discussed.

Market trends are driving the development of polymer and surfactant ingredients toward natural origins—in particular, plants. In this article, the authors review some of the recent trends in green surfactants and polymers for hair care. One interesting technology transfer trend is the use of hydrogen-bonded supramolecular networks to produce self-healing fixative films.

The use of sulfonated alkyl polyglucosides (SAPG) to replace lauryl sulfates and lauryl ether sulfates in sulfate-free formulations has previously been discussed. These primary surfactants were created with environmental and human safety in mind. The current paper describes more recent work with this material, specifically focusing on the lauryl version of SAPG.

Distearyldimethylammonium chloride or DSDMAC (INCI: Distearyldimonium Chloride) is a twin-tailed fatty quaternary ammonium organic compound or fatty quat. Overall, DSDMAC is routinely employed as a cationic emulsifier in cosmetic formulations. It typically is formulated with fatty alcohols to yield o/w emulsions with lamellar LC structures for improved stability, aesthetics, moisturization and active delivery.

Today, cleansing products are available in solid bar, liquid and gel forms and can be based on alkaline salts and synthetic and natural surfactants. When substituted for alkaline salts, synthetic and natural surfactants improve the foam structure and mildness of formulas.

Today’s society is becoming more eco-conscious and as such, consumers want to see natural and organic products now—for a reasonable price and labeled clearly. While it is difficult to create a natural and organic skin care product, it is even more so to formulate an organic or natural hair care product.

In the present article, the author considers factors for sulfate vs. sulfate-free formulating, including cost, foam and viscosity. In addition, two test formulations with and without sulfates are compared. The author concludes that little sound science exists to support the current “sulfate-free” market trend, especially when considering the potential benefits sulfates can impart in formulations.
