Biodegradable Surfactants for Cleansing Applications

The Dow Chemical Company launched bio-based surfactants for personal care during In-Cosmetics in Barcelona. The EcoSense surfactants (INCI: Varies) are naturally derived, biodegradable surfactants. Belonging to the family of alkyl polyglucosides, they can be used as  primary and co-surfactants in a variety of cleansing applications, such as shampoos, body washes, facial cleansers, liquid hand soaps and baby wipes.

The products were designed to be milder to the skin and hair, and have an improved environmental profile. Ecocert-certified, they assist formulators developing products for “natural” label claims without compromising product performance.

The EcoSense 1200 Surfactant (Proposed INCI: Lauryl Glucoside), for example, is a C12-14 fatty alcohol glucoside. In addition, the EcoSense 919 Surfactant (Proposed INCI: Coco-Glucoside) is a C12-16 fatty alcohol glucoside. Both are nonionic in nature and benefits include: mildness, moderate to high stable foam, a 100% vegetable origin, self-preserving and low eco-toxicity and toxicity, among others.
