A new cationic homopolymer-based technology was designed to provide long-lasting conditioning to damaged hair without product buildup. Its mechanism, in situ controlled flocculation, is described here, and its capability to restore hydrophobicity to damaged hair is shown. Techniques are detailed for measuring silicone deposition, conditioning performance, hydrophobicity and buildup on hair.

The instrumental and sensorial studies described here assess the ability of a test moisturizing product, at 1% in a surfactant system, to physically improve skin moisturization and structural condition, as well as provide a consumer-perceivable sensorial benefit. Changes in skin protein content, visible skin dryness, trans-epidermal water loss, corneometry and sensorial characteristics were measured and analyzed.

Although there is a demonstrated need for damaged hair products around the world, it can be challenging to formulate for different ethnic groups with their own unique hair characteristics. The need for a conditioning agent across ethnicities led Croda to develop a conditioning agent that is able to improve the appearance, feel and manageability of hair regardless of ethnic origin.

Anti-aging is quickly becoming a large and formidable category in hair care. The description for anti-aging of hair can be explained by a product that provides multi-functional benefits including damage recovery, protection, strength, nourishment and conditioning effects. The anti-aging claim can now be found in all hair care segments, including shampoos, conditioners, serums, colorants and styling agents.

Combining quaternary ammonium and phosphate structures results in a material with amphoteric characteristics. Here, the authors describe behenamidopropyl PG-dimonium chloride phosphate, which was assessed in shampoo and conditioner bases for hair conditioning, softening, combability and anti-static properties; subjective panelist evaluations also were conducted.

Croda partnered with The Centre for Visual Computing at the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom to create the Hair Dynamics Test to measure the movement of healthy hair and compare it to the movement of damaged hair. Then, the research team at Croda set out to create a chemistry that would specifically seek to improve the movement of damaged hair by reducing inter-fiber friction.

Tocopherols and tocotrienols are the major constituents of almond oil, safflower oil and palm oil. They are necessary for the normal growth and metabolism of healthy skin. These oils were formulated in nourishing skin care products and massage creams as part of stable o/w emulsions and were found to have excellent storage stability, flow properties, spreadability and moisturizing properties.

Hydrolyzed jojoba esters were incorporated into formulas including a lotion, hand sanitizer and nonwoven wipes. Small, well-controlled clinical studies were then conducted to compare the formulas with or without glycerin. Results show the esters can potentiate the skin moisturizing effect of glycerin under varying formula conditions. A mechanism of action also is discussed.

The versatility of hyaluronic acid is connected to not only its size, but also to inherent opportunities within the molecule for multiple bonds and for the differentiated release of bound functional molecules. Here, ester bonds are used to introduce substitutes for the material’s alcohol groups, thus providing elasticizing, moisturizing and antiaging benefits for skin care.
