By establishing an ionic bond with water and forming complexes with various actives, this material can impart local or global activity and reach different levels of skin permeability to achieve variable cosmetic efficacy.

While the claims used for skin care are becoming more and more varied, moisturization remains the priority. In this article, a method of improving the moisturization of cosmetics is described involving the use of a polyglycerol-derived blend of vegetable waxes to protect the skin from dehydration and to boost the moisturizing capacity of emulsions.

Here, a micro-wax dispersion is shown to provide conditioning and anti-hair breakage properties. The authors incorporated the material into test shampoos, compared them with two silicone-based benchmarks, and found the micro-wax shampoos provided comparable conditioning and improved hair breakage prevention performance. Results were confirmed in a hair washing test.

While humectants and occlusive agents are the most commonly accepted approaches to moisturize skin, earlier work indicates a third approach: orthorhombic phase stabilization. In the present article, the author describes this novel mechanism of hydration and its detection by conventional and nonconventional methods, suggesting this approach could serve as a basis for all skin moisturizing therapies.

In the present article, a renewable ingredient microemulsion is formulated that is free from ethoxylates and sulfate groups. Used as an additive, the material boosts the conditioning performance of shampoos and improves wet-combing performance by affecting phase separation. In addition, base formulas for standard and “green” shampoos are discussed.

Damaged skin often is associated with increased levels of interleukin-1 (IL-1) and/or prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). In the present study, researchers combined (-)-α-bisabolol, a potent IL-1α inhibitor, with ginger extract, an efficient PGE2 inhibitor. The synergistic anti-irritant efficacy of this mixture was shown in vivo on detergent-induced erythema.
