Black Oat Extract for Skin and Hair Moisturization
Posted: December 22, 2009
Rahn has launched a eco-friendly moisturizer for skin and hair, Aquarich (eco) (INCI: Glycerin (and) Water (aqua) (and) Avena Strigosa (Black Oats) Seed Extract (and) Lecithin), which is approved by Ecocert for use in natural cosmetics. The material is based on an extract of Avena strigosa (black oats), which reportedly contain water-retaining substances such as polysaccharides and amino acids, to support the skin’s own natural moisturizing factor (NMF). It also is designed to enforce the lamellar lipid matrix of the epidermis by reducing TEWL.
When applied to hair, the moisturizer is said to have a reparative effect on damage; an ex vivo study using 0.2% of the moisturizer showed up to a 43% improvement in hair surface structure. In addition, an in vivo study found the material provides deep-acting and long-lasting skin hydration; with 1% of the material, skin moisturization was reportedly enhanced.
The material is recommended at 1.0–5.0% for skin care and 0.2–2.0% for hair care, and it can be formulated into a variety of moisturizing skin, body and hair care products as well as gels, emulsions, shampoos and conditioners.
