Newcomer Launches with Oat Antioxidant, Anti-irritant

Oat Cosmetics, a new raw material supplier, has launched several natural active ingredients for personal care including two oat-derived products. According to the company, it will focus on fully traceable products from renewable resources, and is currently working in partnership with Canadian biotech company Ceapro Inc.

With the company's launch come two product introductions, an oat oil and an extract. OC Oat Oil (INCI: Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Oil) is extracted from whole oat kernels by a gentle process that reportedly retains the important biologically active components. For instance, the product retains high levels of antioxidants, including forms of vitamin E. The oil also is said to comprise a high amount of essential fatty acids, natural emollients and hydrating actives for both skin, cosmetic and hair products. This stable fluid oil is soluble in oil phases and is said to soothe irritation and moisturize the skin.

This product is recommended for most oil-based products, including skin care emulsions, antiaging and sensitive skin products, hair care, baby care, sun care and after-sun products, color cosmetics such as emulsion based foundations and lipsticks/glosses, after-shave lotions and body care products, among others.

The company also has introduced CP Oat Avenanthramide Extract (INCI: Glycerin (and) Water (aqua) (and) Avena Sativa (Oat) Extract), an active designed for sensitive skin and scalp products. Avenanthramides, found in oat grains and silkworm eggs, have natural antioxidant and anti-irritant properties. According to the company, they are known to suppress histamine release at very low levels of 0.5 ppm, which serves an anti-irritant function. This product contains 200 times the level needed to suppress histamines, at 100 ppm and is said to exhibit anti-irritant properties in vivo at usage levels as low as 0.5%. It can be formulated into all product forms, i.e., aqueous, aqueous/alcohol, emulsions, etc.; however, its is recommended: at 3–8% in shampoos and conditioners; at 2–10% in baby care, sun care and after sun care; at 1–5% in creams and lotions; at 1% in antiperspirants; and at 2–5% in liquid foundations.

Although the company is named Oat Cosmetics, its product portfolio will include ingredients that are not based on oats. The company reports it plans to launch three new products and a range of formulations in the fall of 2010.
