Provided are extracts from plants of the Tsuga genus that have anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. The Tsuga extracts are suitable for the treatment of inflammation, irritation and/or infection. For example, for the treatment of dermatological conditions with an associated inflammatory component or infection; for combating the irritant or inflammatory effects of other skin treatment compounds; for combating the irritant or inflammatory effects of environmental factors; for treating obesity-related skin problems (for example, inflammation, redness, erythema, rashes and/or bacterial infections caused by skin folds); for combating the irritant or inflammatory effects of, or infection due to, exfoliation, laser treatments or hair removal; for treating irritation, inflammation and/or infection associated with diaper rash; for incorporation into dermatological formulations for sensitive skins, and for providing a preservative effect to dermatological formulations, as well as for ameliorating the dermatological effects of aging.

The invention relates furanone derivatives and the pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof for treating one or more conditions of the skin, in particular regulating skin condition, regulating signs of skin aging, treating a number of conditions such as contact dermatitis, skin irritation, rosacea, acne, psoriasis, and preventing and protecting skin tissue against age-related damage or damage resulting from insults such as harmful (UV) radiation or environmental pollution, stress and fatigue.

The compounds of the present invention are useful for the treatment of dermatological conditions, particularly the compounds, formulation and methods of the present invention are useful in regulating skin condition, regulating signs of skin aging and in treating a number of conditions, including but not limited to contact dermatitis, skin irritation, rosacea, acne, psoriasis, and in the prevention and protection of skin tissue against age-related damage or damage resulting from insults such as harmful (UV) radiation or environmental pollution, stress and fatigue.
