Skin color and hair color are determined by melanins, which are black polymeric pigments. An abnormal increase in the amount of melanin in the epidermis causes hyperpigmentation such as cloasma and freckles. melanin is synthsized by specialized cells, the melanocytes, which are located in the basal layer of the epidermis.
