Title: Skin Firming Properties Reported in Indian Gooseberry
  • Article

Sabinsa Corp. has launched a natural extract of Indian gooseberry with a high antioxidant content. Saberry ORAC Dense Phytonutrient (INCI: not provided) is a natural extract of Emblica officinalis, known in India as amla or in other parts of the world as Indian gooseberry. Natural amla is an antioxidant super fruit, according to the company, that is pickled and preserved for its health food benefits and used in the ayurvedic tradition as a "rasayana", or tonic, in multiple compositions to support general health maintenance and the management of various health conditions.

The company maintains that the extract's antioxidant capacity helps to prevent oxidative stress and degradation of skin proteins. It also enhances the firmness of the skin. The extract has a cumulative Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) value of 5384 per gram.

The berry extract is standardized to contain a minimum of 10% β-glucogallin and 50% mucis acid 1,4-lactone 5-0-gallate, which are said to be the optimal biomarkers for amla. Conventionally, amla extracts used in dietary supplements were standardized using ascorbic acid as the biomarker. However, recent research has revealed that amla does not contain ascorbic acid in consistent amounts, and sometimes, only in trace quantities, rendering its validity as a biomarker questionable. The company's studies revealed that beta-glucogallin is a more powerful antioxidant molecule than ascorbic acid.

Saberry is a light colored powder and is processed from Indian gooseberries using solvent free technology that preserves the natural goodness of the fruits. The ingredient is a water-soluble phytonutrient with broad spectrum antioxidant activity. ORAC-dense antioxidant phytonutrients have been found to support general health and wellness and healthy aging, according to the company.
