Mibelle Biochemistry has sourced Swiss garden cress sprouts to introduce a liposomal preparation that is a powerful antioxidant phytonutrient for whitening products. SulforaWhite (INCI: Lepidium sativum sprout extract (and) glycerin (and) lecithin (and) phenoxyethanol (and) water (aqua)) inhibits pigmentation by targeting the neutralization of reactive oxygen species and the inhibition of α-MSH, a natural hormone. Both of these upstream reaction steps in the melanin cascade stimulate skin pigmentation.
Reactive oxygen species are generated by UV in keratinocytes. They are targeted by the product by stimulating the cellular antioxidant defense system. The product inhibits α-MSH by preventing it from binding on melanocytes.
Garden cress is rich in phytonutrients. Sulforaphane, with its capacity to neutralize reactive oxidants, is the predominant phytonutrient in garden cress. According to the company, sprouts are much richer in phytonutrients than the mature plant; therefore, the company prepares the ingredient from 4–5 day old garden cress sprouts.
To facilitate absorption into the skin and to target melanocytes, garden cress extract was incorporated into liposomes. In addition to inhibiting melanin formation, the ingredient brightens the skin, fades the appearance of discolorations, reduces the effects of daytime stressors and evens skin tone.
The ingredient is a natural whitening active ingredient that has time-released activity due to the liposomal form. It is recommended for formulation into brightening products for the face and body, antiaging products that address age spots and protective formulations.
