Inhibiting Melanin Synthesis of B16V Cells to Whiten Skin

Spec-Chem Industry Inc. has introduced an ingredient that whitens skin by inhibiting the melanin synthesis of B16V cells. In addition, Phenylethyl Resorcinol (INCI: Phenylethyl Resorcinol) is said to serve an antioxidant action, increase skin elasticity, and reduce both UV-induced pigmentation and hair pigmentation.

The raw material reportedly is both safe and stable. It is recommended at 0.1–1.0%. Formulators should use the ingredient at a pH of 4–5 and avoid its use with carbomers since the pH neutralization will be more than 5.5. Preferred thickeners/stabilizers include ammonium acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP copolymer, xanthan gum, galactoarabinan and hydroxyethylcellulose, which are stable at a low pH.

UV radiation may cause discoloration of the raw material, and UV absorbers such as benzophenone-3 improve color stability; further, the addition of chelating agents at approximately 0.1% to formulations containing the resorcinol assist in preventing discoloration.

Formulators must check the compatibility of nitrogen-containing actives such as amino acids, urea and proteins with the raw material before incorporating them into the formulation. It should also be noted that the resorcinol may cause instability with certain fragrances.
