Coffea bengalensis for Antiwrinkle and Skin Toning Applications
By: Marida Bimonte, Antonietta Carola, Annalisa Ti…
Coffea species have been widely evaluated for effects including oxidative stress protection and immunomodulation. The present study therefore evaluates the cosmetic activity of an extract obtained from cultured Coffea bengalensis stem cells. Results showed the extract imparted hydration activity in the keratinocytes, stimulated collagen synthesis in the fibroblasts and enhanced adipocyte differentiation starting from mesenchymal precursor cells.

The Photostability and Photostabilization of trans-Resveratrol
By: Craig Bonda, Jean Zhang and Anna Pavlovic, The…
In this study, the effects of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) on trans-resveratrol were documented, finding that UV radiation causes it to undergo rapid and extensive photoisomerization and some photodecomposition. The antioxidant activity of trans-resveratrol is correspondingly reduced. However, in the presence of ethylhexyl methoxycrylene, a photostabilizer used in sunscreens, the effects of UV exposure on trans-resveratrol are minimized, thereby preserving its antioxidant activity and, presumably, its bioavailability.

Elicitation of Rice Tissue Culture to Maximize Skin Epigenetic Modulation
Meristem cells of Himalayan red rice were cultured and elicited to produce secondary metabolites. Through an in vitro assay, rejuvenation was shown at the epigenetic level of treated cells. An increased expression of dermatopontin in keratinocytes, besides being a novel finding, implies that ReGeniStem™ Red Rice may be able to firm the skin and improve the skin barrier function.

Researchers Discover Antioxidant Benefits in Black Poplar Extract
Researchers at Biolandes and Polyphénols Biotech have found antioxidant content in a poplar bud (Populus nigra). In "Phenolic Composition and Antioxidant Properties of Poplar Bud (Populus nigra) Extract: Individual Antioxidant Contribution of Phenolics and Transcriptional Effect on Skin Aging," an article that appeared in the American Chemical Society's Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, the researchers suggest that an aqueous extract of P. nigra possesses antioxidant properties that could be utilized in nutraceuticals for an anti-aging skin benefit.
