Technically Speaking: Topical Botulinum Toxin, FOITS to Measure Anti-wrinkle, and More

Charles Fox, Independent Consultant

Skin and Skin Care
Evaluating anti-wrinkle via FOITS technique: ML Abella has published on using the Fast Optical In vivo Topometry of Human Skin (FOITS) technique to evaluate the anti-wrinkle efficacy of adenosine-containing products. Formulations containing adenosine to reduce periorbital lines and glabellar frowns were evaluated in a blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study. There were 126 female volunteers between 45 and 65 who met the inclusion criteria for treatment of periorbital lines and were provided with two of three products—cream with adenosine, dissolvable film with adenosine, or placebo—to be applied to the periorbital area on each side of the face (84 subjects per product).

Of these subjects, 84 also fulfilled the inclusion criteria for glabellar frowns and received placebo or cream with adenosine to be applied to the glabellar area. Products were applied twice daily for two months and evaluation was performed under dermatological supervision at zero, three and eight weeks using the FOITS analysis to describe their skin profiles.

Both adenosine-containing products led to significant improvements in skin smoothness in the periorbital area. Improvements were observed using the FOITS technique after three weeks of product application and were steadily confirmed after two months, despite severe climatic conditions. The cream also significantly improved glabellar frowns. These results demonstrate the potential beneficial effects of an adenosine-containing product on crow’s-feet and glabellar facial wrinkles.
